Children What
is SAFEChurch Training?
SAFEChurch Training provides awareness in the areas of sexual conduct and sexual abuse issues for both employees and volunteers working within the congregations and organizations of the Diocese of Oregon.
It
is a four-hour session: "Safeguarding
God's Children".
Who should attend and why?
Over the last few years many people in our Diocese have attended what has been known as the Sexual Boundaries Workshops. This program has evolved, over time, with the assistance of committed clergy and lay people. Motivated by a desire to keep Gods people safe and to assist in the healing of those who are hurting, these people provide SAFEChurch training workshops in the local congregations.
As the people of God in the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon we are committed to the safety of all Gods people. This recommendation outlines who is required to attend which of the training sessions:
“Safeguarding
God’s Children”
Clergy
Senior Warden
Paid Staff
All persons with direct interaction with children and youth
In striving to live
out our baptismal covenant we are called
to respect the dignity of every human being.
Keeping our people safe is just one way
of doing this.
Societal norms regarding sexual behavior have changed and there is a heightened awareness of the importance of appropriate behavior in relationships where sexual issues can arise. Assessment of history in the area of sexual issues reveals the seriousness of the psychological and spiritual trauma that sexual abuse and exploitation can cause.
Proof of completion of training such as this is always an asset in cases where an employee or volunteer is accused of misconduct, particularly if the matter goes to litigation.
How much time does it take?
session requires four hours of class attendance.
What does it cost?
The fee for each session attended is $10.00
Some congregations pay the fee for their participants and others request that the participants pay their own fee.
Fees may be charged to the individual church after the event or may be paid by the individual at the door.
What about food?
The
host church will provide simple snacks for
the morning break in the Saturday sessions,
or a light lunch before the Sunday sessions..
What about certification?
All
participants are required to sign in at
the beginning of the session and sign out
at the end.
Participants who complete the entire four hours of a session will receive a certificate affirming their participation.
