Jubilee: Hope in New Beginnings

Cursorily ... From the Editor's Screen
by The Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori

The idea of jubilee has been loudly trumpeted about the church during the last year of the 1990s. The World Council of Churches, among other church bodies, has called for a cancellation of third world debt. The Roman Catholic church is focussed on the year of 2000 as a year of Jubilee. In this issue, we offer an overview of the biblical roots of jubilee, what that might look like in practical and local ministries (Jubilee ministries), as well as on a world level (Jubilee at Lambeth). Jubilee has a great deal to do with forgiveness, both economic and interpersonal, and the final articles provide some thoughts about forgiveness, children, and what we might learn. We also provide some resource suggestions.

There are few better summaries of what Jubilee is all about than Jesus’ words at Luke 4:18-19:

The spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

May the year 2000 bring us new understanding of the year of jubilee, and the willingness to make it real.
