New York City – The Big Apple is the perfect place to study the intersection of theology and theatre. This summer, General Seminary once again offers its popular “Experiencing Theater & Theology” from July 10 to 13.

Participants attend three current New York theatrical productions, have opportunities to meet and share reflections with performers and artists, and explore some of the theological and ethical assumptions in modern theatre. Space in the class, part of the Seminary’s Lifelong Learning program, is usually sold out early. Shows currently being considered for the course are August: Osage County, South Pacific, and November -- although these selections are subject to change. Leaders for the course will be the Rev. Barbara Cawthorne Crafton and the Rev. Kate Malin.

Barbara Cawthorne Crafton, an Episcopal priest and well-known author, is former rector of St. Clement's Church in Manhattan's theatre district. An actress, director and producer, she has worked for many years in combining the lively arts and the life of faith. She is seen frequently on television both as a preacher and as a commentator on Hallmark's "New Morning" and "America at Worship."

Kate Malin is also an Episcopal priest, currently serving at Christ Church, Bronxville, NY. A professional actress for twelve years before attending seminary, she holds a theater degree from Yale and was co-founder of A Stage Above, a resident summer theater company in Westchester. In 2005, Kate received a grant from the Evangelical Education Society to produce and perform The Cup, an original theatre piece of theater considering women’s bodies in worship.

In addition to enjoying the relaxing serenity of the Seminary’s park-like grounds, participants will be able to stay at the Desmond Tutu Center, a newly-opened conference facility on campus with 60 beautifully appointed guest rooms. Created from three of the Seminary’s historic buildings, the new facility offers easy access to all of Manhattan’s cultural offerings.

Costs for this popular course, which includes tickets for shows and meals, are $1335 for one person without lodging, $1650 for one person with lodging in single room in the Tutu Center, and $2950 for two participants lodging together in single room. For more information or to register please contact Ellen Marie Andrews at 888-487-5649 x269 or by e-mail at ccs@gts.edu or visit http://www.gts.edu/contedsummer.asp. Space is  limited so please reserve by April 25, 2008.

The General Theological Seminary is located between Ninth and Tenth Avenues in New York City and occupies the full block between West 20th and West 21st Streets (entrance on West 21st Street). Visitors are always welcome at our beautiful, park-like campus in the center of historic Chelsea.
