Raleigh Hills - Sergio-Francis Zenisek, a senior at Oregon Episcopal School in Raleigh Hills, was named a regional finalist Monday in the annual Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science and Technology.
The national competition awards high school students based on science research projects they design and complete during school. Winners receive thousands of dollars in scholarships, with the top individual and team receiving about $100,000.
Zenisek, one of 30 U.S. finalists, will advance to the Western regional competition Nov. 4 at the University of California at Berkeley.
The 17-year-old from West Linn was recognized for his research on the chemical evolution of living systems.
Matthew Rognlie of West Linn High School and Anarghya Vardhana of Jesuit High School in Beaverton were named semifinalists.
The competition is administered by The College Board and financed by the Siemens Foundation, which awards more than $1 million a year to college-bound high school students.
