The Diocesan Council announced today that it has awarded a total of $5,500 in grants from the 2007 Pentecost Offering, which took place in all congregations on Sunday, May 27. Because of the generosity of diocesan members, the Council was able to fund in full the three requests that were submitted earlier this year. The Pentecost Offering is for "brick and mortar" projects, community ministries, for new ministries, or for seed money to new initiatives.
Awardee: St. John the Evangelist/William Temple House
Amount: $2,000
Project: Children's Clothing Project
New clothing (only) is distributed to needy children in Grades K-6 in the North Clackamas School District. All children nominated by their school will receive assistance.
Rationale: The program is a way to "be Jesus in the world" 'by ministering to the poor and by clothing the naked.
Awardee: St. John, Bandon
Amount: $3,000
Project: Startup of Parish Nurse/Health Ministry
Rationale: Bandon is demographically aging, as is the congregation at St. John's. The parish nurse/health would serve the congregation and be a resource and outreach ministry to the community.
Awardee: Church of the Good Samaritan, Corvallis
Amount: $500
Project: Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers Program (funding of background checks)
Rationale: The Volunteer Interfaith Caregivers Program was established in 1986 to benefit the needy in Benton County. Background checks are increasingly utilized in volunteer organizations for the protection of volunteers and clients. The cost of background checks can be difficult for individuals to pay and the program has limited resources.
