The Right Reverend Johncy Itty, Ph.D.,
is currently the ninth bishop of the
Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, where
he serves as chief pastor to more than
22,000 Episcopalians in 76 churches
throughout Western Oregon. As bishop,
he serves as a board member of the
Legacy Hospital System in Portland,
and also serves on the board of William
Temple House, Ecumenical Ministries
of Oregon, and the Northwest House
of Theological Studies. Bishop Itty
is the chairman of the boards of Good
Samaritan Regional Medical Center in
Corvallis, Oregon, and The Oregon Episcopal
School in Portland.
Prior to his election, Bishop Itty
served as canon residentiary of the
Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden
City, New York. In his ministry there
he was actively involved in program
development and administration, pastoral
care, and a variety of diocesan activities
on behalf of the cathedral. Prior
to his service at the Cathedral of
the Incarnation, he served on the
staff of the Presiding Bishop as
the social justice officer for the
Episcopal Church USA where he worked
with various leaders and networks
throughout the Episcopal Church to
implement some of the social justice
concerns raised by the General Convention
and Executive Council of the Episcopal
Church.
Bishop Itty’s portfolio
includes a number of activities
related to
human rights, economic justice,
and international economic issues.
Bishop
Itty also previously served as
the human rights officer in the
Anglican
Communion office at the United
Nations, an office of the Archbishop
of Canterbury
and the Anglican Consultative Council.
In this position he had been involved
in advocacy work in the field of
human rights, international affairs
and global economics, for the provinces,
dioceses, and member churches of
the Anglican Communion.
Bishop Itty holds advanced graduate
degrees from Columbia University,
New York, the City University of
New York, and completed his theological
training at New York Theological
Seminary. Bishop Itty has served
as a research consultant at United
Nations Headquarters in New York,
and has represented the Anglican
UN Office at the United Nations Human
Rights Commission in Geneva. He has
served as an editorial respondent
for WCBS-TV New York, worked as a
planner/portfolio manager for the
United States General Services Administration,
and also served as adjunct assistant
professor of political science at
the City University of New York where
he taught international affairs and
comparative government. Bishop Itty
is a member of the executive committee
and board of directors of Church
World Service, a major ecumenical
humanitarian relief agency affiliated
with the National Council of Churches.
He also serves as chair of the Education
and Advocacy Committee of Church
World Service, representing the Episcopal
Church USA. Bishop Itty served as
deputy to the General Convention
of the Episcopal Church USA and served
on the Program, Budget, and Finance
Committee of the Episcopal Church.
He has been active in ministry for
a number of years at the international,
national, and diocesan level and
has especially been involved in issues
related to evangelism, social justice,
diversity, and Christian formation
Bishop
Itty is married to
Dr. Jolly Itty and has two daughters,
Julie and Jennifer, who attend
Oregon Episcopal School in Portland.
