Camp & Retreat News - April 28, 2008
by Beth Dieker, Camp & Retreat Ministry Coordinator

“You love me that much, that you’d send me to camp?”

These are the words that were spoken by a 3rd grader upon learning that she would get to go to camp for the first time. Her Episcopal church had the funds set aside to pay for her fees and set up a sponsor to help her get to camp…something her parents could not provide for her. The Camp Registrar just forwarded this information to me and let me know that this beautiful child of God and her two siblings are all signed up for camps.

Grand Camp!

Enjoy a weekend away with your grandkids enjoying the beautiful outdoors and participating in classic camp activities. Grand Camp is one of the most popular camps of the summer and the sessions fill very quickly. Dates for this summer are:

Camp Magruder (Oregon Coast) $125/adult, $110/youth, $75/child, $45/child aged 2-5

Grand Camp I June 20-22
Grand Camp II August 22-24

Camp Latgawa (Southern Oregon) $90/adult, $80/youth, $48/child

Grand Camp July 18-20

Camp Sawtooth (Idaho) $70/adult, $35/child

Grand Camp June 27-29

Opportunity for Ministry

Women of Wisdom, a program of Quest Center, Portland, Oregon, strives to support, educate and empower HIV+ women and their children by offering group and individual counseling, case management, peer outreach and advocacy. This summer we are pleased to support this group with a two-night camp at Suttle Lake. The purpose of the camp is to provide some time away for rest and play. I participated in this camp last summer and learned that these women are living in poverty due to the high cost of their medications. They were absolutely thrilled to spend 24 hours at Camp Magruder petting the donkeys, boating, making crafts and just relaxing. This year we are able to extend the camp to two nights at Suttle Lake, August 12-14, 2008. I will be Camp Dean this year and need to add a few more volunteers to my camp staff. Quest Center and the Methodist Church will each be sending two volunteers. Volunteers and campers without children will be housed in Wesley Meadow Lodge. Campers with children will be housed in smaller cabins. These are the openings:

1. Medical Professsional (i.e. nurse, doctor, nurse practitioner, physician assistant): to provide any emergent medical care needed and dispense medication. You will be housed in an apartment that includes the health room
2. Friend/Listener: this volunteer position is exactly what it says: being a friend to the campers and listening to them. This may include helping with a craft, going on a walk or an extra pair of eyes at the dock
3. Licensed Massage Therapist: to give15 minute massages to the campers (i.e. chair massage). You will be provided with a private room for massage

If you are willing to be a part of this ministry to HIV+ women, please let me know as soon as possible.
