Bishop Itty leads the children in the processional during the Closing Eucharist.

The Rev. Dcn. Maron Van, Church of the Resurrection, Eugene, washes the feet of young participants during an explanation of Maundy Thursday—the Thursday in Holy Week that commemorates the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist; the day when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples.

At the Lent station, a participant bends over a bowl of water to make the sign of the cross before walking a labyrinth, which is a metaphor for reflection and prayer during this season of the church.

A boy blows his breath through a straw to whirl around paint on the outline of a dove at the Pentecost/Ordinary Time rotation. The breath painting represents how the Holy Spirit works within the world, unseen, but powerful and moving.

A boy studying the cycle of the church year that includes Advent, Christmas and Epiphany copies the word for “peace,” in Hebrew: Shalom. He also drew the letters for peace in Arabic: Salaam.

Four young girls who took part in the day-long event at the cathedral posed for a photographer during the lunch break.

It’s hard work listening to a story about Pentecost for this little girl, who needed to be supine to take in the book reading by Charissa Simmons, a parishioner at Trinity Cathedral and one of 30 adult volunteers who worked with the children at their annual day at the cathedral.

The Rev. Dcn. Maureen Hagen, St. Paul, Salem, explains what a piece of matzo is and why Jesus and his disciples would eat the unleavened bread during a Passover Seder as part of children’s experience during the Holy Week/Easter rotation.
