A Prayer for a DIOCESAN Time of Transition
Almighty God, we pray that the power of Christ’s love may be present in our lives as we, the people of the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, enter a time of prayerful discernment and transition to new leadership. May the Holy Spirit illumine the hearts and minds of those who have the responsibility to lead us as we prepare to build on the vision that is before us. Let not the prospect of change be an occasion for fear and confusion, but rather a time to build trust and increase understanding that Christ’s love may be made known between us and among us that your will may be done. Amen.

The Last Word: From The Very Rev. Lin Knight, Interim Admin. Team…

A photographer from a national magazine was assigned to cover a big fire. The magazine wanted to show some of the heroic work of the firefighters as they battled the blaze. When the photographer realized that the smoke was so thick it would be impossible for him to photograph anything from ground level he requested permission to rent a plane and take photos from the air. His request was approved and he was told to report to a nearby airport where a single engine plane would be waiting for him.

He arrived at the airport and saw a plane warming up near the gate. He jumped in with his bag and shouted, 'Let's go!' The pilot swung the plane into the wind, and within minutes they were in the air. The photographer said, 'Fly over the park and make two or three low passes so I can take some pictures.' 'Why?' asked the pilot. 'Because that's why I'm up here,' he said. 'I'm a photographer for a national magazine and I need some close-up shots.' The pilot was silent for a moment.

Finally he stammered, 'So, you're telling me you're not the flight instructor?'

St. Michael & All Angels has committed to funding half of the salary and benefits for a half-time bilingual, bicultural priest for liturgical functions, Christian formation, and pastoral care for this growing congregation currently numbering more than 80 souls. OES to offer Vocal and Instrumental Music Camps for kids

Oregon Episcopal School is offering children’s music camps ranging from a boys choir to guitar music of the Beatles. The camps are taught by OES music faculty and professional instructors, and private lessons also are available.

In the Boys Chorister Camp, OES instructors Adam Steele and Sue Jensen will teach vocal and choral techniques to boys in grades two through seven. The boys will sing great sacred and secular musical literature.

Lewis & Clark College adjunct professor Allen Matthews will instruct a camp called “Beginning Guitar & Music of the Beatles.” The class for children in grades three to 12, will introduce students to fundamental classical techniques, notation, solo and ensemble performance and interpretation. It is geared for complete beginners as well as players who learned to play with a pick and want to learn to play with their fingers in the classical style.

Two camps will concentrate on playing string music of Italy. In the beginners camp, for children in kindergarten through fifth grade, OES violin teacher Neil Hollister will teach how to play the violin and will use the music of Italy to explore string techniques, music theory, and music appreciation. In the camp for students in grades six through 12, the daily schedule includes string technique, ensemble rehearsals, sectionals, and chamber music coaching. It will be taught by OES strings teacher Nelly Kovalev and professional bassist Dan Presley, who is on the adjunct music faculty for Marylhurst University.

A music performance class for grades four through eight will be taught by Margaret Harris, who will explore a variety of techniques for preparing musical performances. Private lessons will be offered in jazz bass, cello, viol da gamba, drums and percussion, classical guitar, organ & harpsichord, piano, cello and trombone.

Additional information about the camps can be found on the Oregon Episcopal School website at http://www.oes.edu/Summer/lessons.htm or by calling Summer Programs Director Joan Lowe at 503-768-3145.

The Boston Children's Chorus is coming to Portland!

Contance Hammond writes: They are coming to Eugene, first, as one of ten choruses invited to an international festival, and then they will come to Portland for a 7:00 p.m. performance at All Saints Episcopal Church, SE 40th and Woodstock, on July 1st. The singers on this tour range in age from 9 to 18, with most falling between the ages of 12 and 15. They come from the public schools of Boston and are an outstanding, internationally recognized group. What I am looking for is homes for the singers to stay. PLEASE ASK IF ANYONE IN YOUR CHURCH HAS SPACE to invite two (or more) young people to their homes for the nights of June 30th and July 1st. Here is the proposed schedule:

Monday, June 30th:
4:00 p.m.: Chorus arrives at All Saints, where singers are picked up to stay with their host family for dinner and the night.

Tuesday, July 1st:
8:00 or 9:00 a.m. (to be decided): Following breakfast, the host family drops singers off at All Saints, where they will take off for a day of sightseeing.
6:00 p.m.: Dinner at All Saints.
7:00 p.m.: Concert at All Saints.
8:30 p.m.: Host families pick up singers for remainder of the night.

Wednesday, July 2nd:
5:00 a.m.: After a light breakfast, drop off singers at Portland Airport (or 4:30 a.m. at All Saints) for departure.

Thank you for passing this information on for us.

PBS DOCUMENTARY OF INTEREST TO EPISCOPALIANS
A PBS documentary tracing the connections between slave trading and a prominent Rhode Island Episcopal family two centuries ago will be shown on public television on June 24 (check local listings for time). The documentary, “Traces of the Trade,” was produced and directed by Katrina Browne, a descendant of the DeWolf family of Rhode Island, the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history and also a prominent part of the Episcopal Church I Rhode Island. James DeWolf Perry was the church’s 18th presiding bishop. Says Katrina Browne: "In 'Traces of the Trade,' we wanted to ask this question: What is our responsibility? I'm less concerned with understanding the extreme inhumanity of my ancestors than with understanding the mundane, ordinary complicity of the majority of New Englanders who participated in a slave-based economy. That had more parallels to me and my family today: well-intentioned white folks who are still part of systems that do harm. It’s important to roll up our sleeves to deal with what we all inherited from our country’s history."

FUNERAL NOTICE
Agnes Francis, mother of Trinity parishioner David Tufenkian, died February 4, 2008. Her memorial service will be Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at 1:00 pm, at Lake Grove Presbyterian Church, 4040 Sunset Blvd, Lake Oswego.

The Last Word: Arlene Pickard sends this week’s chuckle…

The pastor of a church had a kitten that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and pulled it until the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten. That's what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward, the rope broke. The tree went 'boing!' and the kitten instantly sailed through the air, out of sight.

The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they'd seen a little kitten. No. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, 'Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping,' and went on about his business.

A few days later he was at the grocery store, and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, 'Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?'. She replied, 'You won't believe this,' and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child had begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, 'Well, if God gives you a cat, I'll let you keep it', she told the pastor. 'I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat.

And really, Pastor, you won't believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of he blue sky, with its paws outspread, and landed right in front of her.'

Never underestimate the Power of God and His unique sense of humor!!!

BISHOP LADEHOFF CHANGE OF ADDRESS AND PIANO OFFER…
Bishop Ladehoff reports he has a new mailing address. It is:

The Rt. Rev. Robert Ladehoff
1330 SW Third Ave. Apt. P-8 (Note new apt. number)
Portland, OR 97201
(No change in email or phone number)

In the course of moving, he has realized that he no longer needs a piano. He would be happy to give his piano as a gift to any church that could use it.
“It is a small, spinet piano, thirty-six inches high, and twenty-five inches deep. The brand name is Acrosonic, which, I understand, was a branch of the Baldwin Piano Co. It is not new - my wife bought it before we were married, fifty years ago. But it is in good shape. Everything works. It probably needs tuning. And it comes with a matching piano bench. If anyone wants more information, they call me directly:
(971-544-1800)…”, Bishop Ladehoff.

Peter & Paul provides includes ministering to the homeless through Brigid's Table and to women in prostitution through Rahab's Sisters, and providing free dental services for those without insurance with regular visits by the Medical Teams International Dental Van. For over 20 years, Brigid's Table has ministered to the homeless. Their hot meal program serves more than 50 people struggling with poverty and homelessness every week . Rahab’s Sisters provides a ministry of presence to women working in the sex industry on Portland’s SE 82nd Avenue. The ministry gives hospitality and friendship to women of all faiths and women of no faith, offering food and a chance to come in off the streets to talk and pray in a safe place. The ministry has expanded rapidly since its inception in 2003, with about a dozen parishioners currently active as volunteers. Each Friday night, they visit with anywhere from eight to more than 20 women, who are among the poorest and most marginalized in southeast Portland.

The Last Word: Father Chet Falby (St. Catherine’s Manzanita) offers this…

A young man learns what's most important in life from the man next door. It had been some time since Jack had seen the old man. College, girls, career, and life itself got in the way. In fact, Jack moved clear across the country in pursuit of his dreams. There, in the rush of his busy life, Jack had little time to think about the past and often no time to spend with his wife and son. He was working on his future, and nothing could stop him.

Over the phone, his mother told him, 'Mr. Belser died last night. The funeral is Wednesday.' Memories flashed through his mind like an old newsreel as he sat quietly remembering his childhood days. 'Jack, did you hear me?' 'Oh, sorry, Mom. Yes, I heard you. It's been so long since I thought of him. I'm sorry, but I honestly thought he died years ago,' Jack said.

'Well, he didn't forget you. Every time I saw him he'd ask how you were doing. He'd reminisce about the many days you spent over 'his side of the fence' as he put it,' Mom told him. 'I loved that old house he lived in,' Jack said. 'You know, Jack, after your father died, Mr. Belser stepped in to make sure you had a man's influence in your life,' she said.

'He's the one who taught me carpentry,' he said. 'I wouldn't be in this business if it weren't for him. He spent a lot of time teaching me things he thought were important. Mom, I'll be there for the funeral,' Jack said. As busy as he was, he kept his word. Jack caught the next flight to his hometown. Mr. Belser's funeral was small and uneventful. He had no children of his own, and most of his relatives had passed away.

The night before he had to return home, Jack and his Mom stopped by to see the old house next door one more time. Standing in the doorway, Jack paused for a moment. It was like crossing over into another dimension, a leap through space and time. The house was exactly as he remembered. Every step held memories. Every picture, every piece of furniture....Jack stopped suddenly.

'What's wrong, Jack?' his Mom asked. 'The box is gone,' he said. 'What box?' Mom asked. 'There was a small gold box that he kept locked on top of his desk. I must have asked him a thousand times what was inside. All he'd ever tell me was 'the thing I value most,'' Jack said. It was gone. Everything about the house was exactly how Jack remembered it, except for the box. He figured someone from the Belser family had taken it. 'Now I'll never know what was so valuable to him,' Jack said. 'I better get some sleep. I have an early flight home, Mom.'

It had been about two weeks since Mr. Belser died. Returning home from work one day, Jack discovered a note in his mailbox. 'Signature required on a package. No one at home. Please stop by the main post office within the next three days,' the note read. Early the next day Jack retrieved the package. The small box was old and looked like it had been mailed a hundred years ago. The handwriting was difficult to read, but the return address caught his attention. 'Mr. Harold Belser' it read. Jack took the box out to his car and ripped open the package. There inside was the gold box and an envelope. Jack's hands shook as he read the note inside.

'Upon my death, please forward this box and its contents to Jack Bennett. It's the thing I valued most in my life.'

A small key was taped to the letter. His heart racing, as tears filling his eyes, Jack carefully unlocked the box. There inside he found a beautiful gold pocket watch. Running his fingers slowly over the finely etched casing, he unlatched the cover. Inside he found these words engraved: 'Jack, Thanks for your time! - Harold Belser.'

'The thing he valued most was...my time.' Jack held the watch for a few minutes, then called his office and cleared his appointments for the next two days. 'Why?' Janet, his assistant asked. 'I need some time to spend with my son,' he said. 'Oh, by the way, Janet, thanks for your time!'

'Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.' Think about this. You may not realize it, but it's 100% true.

1. At least 2 people in this world love you so much they would die for you.
2. At least 15 people in this world love you in some way.
3. A smile from you can bring happiness to anyone, even if they don't like you.
4. Every night, someone thinks about you before they go to sleep.
5. You mean the world to someone.
6. If not for you, someone may not be living.
7. You are special and unique.
8. When you think you have no chance of getting what you want, you probably won't get it, but if you trust God to do what's best, and wait on His time, sooner or later, you will get it or something better.
9. When you make the biggest mistake ever, something good can still come from it.
10. When you think the world has turned its back on you, take a look: you most likely turned your back on the world.
11. Someone that you don't even know exists, loves you.
12. Always remember the compliments you received. Forget about the rude remarks.
13 . Always tell someone how you feel about them; you will feel much better when they know and you'll both be happy.
14. If you have a great friend, take the time to let them know that they are great.

Amen.

The Last Word: It’s Tax Time…

A little boy wanted $100.00 very badly and prayed for weeks, but nothing happened. Then he decided to write God a letter requesting the $100.00. When the postal authorities received the letter to God, they decided to send it to the President.

The President was so amused that he instructed his secretary to send the little boy a $5.00 bill. The President thought this would appear to be a lot of money to a little boy.

The little boy was delighted with the $5.00 bill and sat down to write a thank-you note to God, which read:

Dear God: Thank you very much for sending the money. However, I noticed that for some reason you sent it through Washington, D.C., and the government deducted $95 in taxes!
