- Some specific icons and their meaning
Here are five icons and an
explanation of each. See if you can identify the respective
parts of
the image and the meanings that the symbols convey.
Four of the icons described here
all located in Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 147
NW 19th Avenue, Portland, Oregon and may be visited
at any time the Cathedral is open, or by asking at
the reception desk in the Cathedral office. Brochures
describing the Cathedral icons are available in pamphlet
racks there. The “Holy Trinity” icon is the Patronal icon of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. The gift to the Cathedral by Trinity’s Iconography Institute of this icon commemorates the Ordination and Consecration of The Rt. Rev. Michael J.Hanley, as 10th Bishop of Oregon.
The fourth icon, that of St. Thomas, is
in Kerala, India. It was written for The Rt. Rev. Johncy
Itty, Ph.D., eighth bishop of the Diocese of Oregon.
The fifth icon, Hagia Aekaterina (Holy Catherine),
was a gift from members of the Trinity Iconography
Institute to the Most. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori,
26th presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church and presented
to her on April 22, 2007 at Trinity Cathedral, Portland.
It too, was written by members of the Institute.
ICONOGRAPHY INSTITUTE
The Iconography Institute at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Portland, Oregon is an ongoing activity and trains individuals of any Christian denomination who are interested in and agree to commit to, the practice, Canons and rubrics of iconography according to the Eastern Orthodox Christian Church.
Since 1999, the Institute's Instructor
has been Master Iconographer Sherry V. Lynch who lives in
La Center, Washington. Many will remember the vast amount
of work written by Sherry under her former name of Bettendorf.
Sherry trained in Turkey and was acknowledged as an iconographer
by His Holiness Athenagoras, Patriarch of Byzantium.
Evening classes are scheduled to run for 12 weeks, meeting
on Monday evenings from 6:30-9:00pm. The week-long class
begins 8:30am-4:00pm (with a lunch break) Monday-Friday.
It was added recently to accommodate people from around the
diocese for whom 12-week classes are impracticable. Each
student can expect to complete a small icon of his or her
choice from among several prototypes provided by the instructor.
Class fees are modest and cover the
cost of retaining the instructor. A small supplies and
administration fee is also
charged. Experienced iconographers are welcome and cordially
invited to “paint-in” with students at no charge,
year-round on most Monday evenings, (excluding public holiday
observances) beginning at 6:30pm.
