Commission for the Deaf

Deaf CommissionThe commission provides community outreach for the poor and those in crisis in the deaf community, offers opportunities for spiritual growth and communal worship experiences for the deaf and hearing-impaired, reaches out to marginalized deaf people in the community and to deaf students at Western Oregon State University, and shares knowledge and awareness of deaf people in the hearing church.

The commission has a deacons’ discretionary fund that provides emergency community support for deaf adults and children, including food, medication and transportation. Income for this support is totally dependent on donations. Members of the commission visit foster care facilities which have deaf residents and work in conjunction with mental health programs for deaf clients. Opportunities for spiritual growth include interpreted worship services and signed worship program.
