Indian Commission

The goal of the commission is to establish traditions and set precedents that encourage communication, trust, reconciliation, mutual understanding, and fellowship between the Church as an institution and as individuals and the First Nations People as historic tribes and as individuals. Our outreach efforts will focus on urban Native Americans, specifically in the Portland metropolitan area.

Last year meetings were held with the Grand Ronde tribal community dealing with issues focusing on tribal elections and a potluck social during diocesan convention. Establishing relationships and trust is the focus this year. The Rev. Albert Krueger, commission convener, has spent time in South Dakota visiting with congregations that are linked to specific reservations. His training has included a seminar with a Church Divinity School of the Pacific team, and he has been invited to join Province VIII to participate in ministries among First Nations People. We have begun networking with the Dioceses of Eastern Oregon and Olympia, and a prayer relationship is developing with Frontier Missions of Portland, an evangelical outreach to the reservations of the West.
