The Commission envisions its mission and ministry as connecting the members of the diocese with the resources, networks, and educational opportunities that will strengthen each individual’s ability to live out his or her covenant of Holy Baptism. As Disciples of Christ we are called to witness to Christ’s love by advocating for the dignity of all human beings and by working for peace and justice in the communities in which we live. Our plan is to work in partnership with other programs in our communities in order to build relationships to achieve our goals.
We will examine issues of Peace and Justice by asking “How are the children?” producing one thousand buttons that emphasize the point. Working in cooperation with NW Parish Nurses we will develop the theme for the fall conference. Additional outreach is planned with a meeting between Bishop Itty and Portland Mayor Tom Potter, ongoing participation in Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, and partnering with diocesan deacons. Recently members of the commission helped plan and participated in the Interfaith Advocacy Day at the Oregon State Capitol, an event sponsored by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon, the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon, and other faith organizations from around the state.
