Youth Mission Trip 2013: Paiute Indian Reservation, Burns

Tags:
Date:
Friday, June 21, 2013 (All day) to Saturday, June 29, 2013 (All day)

This mission trip is the result of diocesan youth leaders wanting a mission trip for their youth that is affordable and close to home. We will be hosted by St. Andrew Episcopal and Peace Lutheran Church and they are excited to have a young group come to Burns!

We will have access to a school across the street from the parish for shower facilities. The Rev. Kathleen Galvin of St. Barnabas, McMinnville, and member of the Sioux tribe, will be our Chaplain for this trip.

We have been asked to provide:

  • VBS for the Paiute children at Church of the Living Waters on the reservation
  • Maintenance work around the reservation with an emphasis on plumbing.  We are looking for at least one plumber to join us.

Participation in one pre-trip planning and training event will be required for all attendees.

Financial assistance may be provided by your local parish so please check with your priest or youth leader!

Clergy Conference 2013 - Jesus on the Road: Clergy as Leaders

Tags:
Date:
Monday, April 29, 2013 (All day) to Wednesday, May 1, 2013 (All day)

Oregon Garden Resort in Silverton

Come for a formative discussion as we engage the question of congregational leadership in the 21st century. Discussion organized by Bishop Michael Hanley, the Rev. Sara Fischer, and the Rev. Dr. Rob Voyle.

Framed by corporate prayer and fellowship, we'll offer five conversations that engage the question of leadership in the 21st century.
Each conversation will be structured around basic questions and explorations. Among those are:
  • Returning to our first love. In a conversation with Bishop Michael, we’ll explore these questions: What do you love about being a follower of Jesus? What made you decide to follow Jesus? How has the following - and what you love - changed during your ministry?
  • The first task of leadership: working with others. One of the first things Jesus did was create a ministry team, a motley crew of disciples. Who is on our team? We will look through the lens of faith development and focus on who we have around us and how we lead them as followers of Jesus.
  • Talking with Jesus: a walking meditation. Taking advantage of some free time and the lovely setting of the Oregon Garden, we will set forth on an optional walking meditation to converse with Jesus (and, if we choose, others) about our ministry team and our own sense of self as leader.
  • The seven positions of leadership. Transformational leaders need to know, and be able to move fluidly between, several distinct leadership positions. We’ll look at stories of Jesus in these positions and explore our own experiences.
  • The three faces of compassion: Discovering and using tenderness, fierceness, and mischievousness to transform lives and congregations. Explore the crazy wisdom of Jesus in order to understand the dynamics of transformation.

Register for rooms directly with the Oregon Gardens. For more information, you can also start registering for rooms now, see their website: http://www.moonstonehotels.com/Oregon-Garden-Resort.htm.

Sheltering Our Souls: A Retreat for Women

Tags:
Date:
Friday, March 8, 2013 (All day) to Sunday, March 10, 2013 (All day)

Listening for Guidance is the theme of our 2013 retreat. Led by Cammie Bella and Beth Dieker, this retreat will be focus on how might we hear God’s guidance. We all pray or have prayed sometime. We give thanks. We ask for things. We cry for help. How many of us were taught how to listen for guidance though? Many of us spend much of our lives in a “one way” conversation with God. No one taught us how to quiet our own chatter and listen for God’s voice - how to tune into God’s “channel”. We will explore some of the attitudes and practices which help us tune our “antennas” into the “God station”. As we practice what it means to be living in alignment with God’s desires for us, we come to know more and more what an abundant, whole-hearted life is all about. How to be the person God is drawing out of us and let go of the masks and armor we have constructed around us. How to be open to joy and let go of fear.

Alton L. Collins offers hotel-style accommodations with all linens provided. Participants will enjoy Chef Guillermo’s delicious northwest-fresh meals. Special diets are accommodated with advance notice.  The cost for the retreat is $165. Scholarship assistance is available by contacting Beth Dieker at the diocesan office: (971) 204-4124 or bethd@diocese-oregon.org.

You may register online at http://www.collinsretreatcenter.org/events.html or call (503) 637-6411 to register by phone. The retreat center is ADA accessible.
