Becoming Beloved Community: 2018 Lenten Program

Becoming Beloved Community: 2018 Lenten Program

In February of 2016, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry began meeting with leaders in the Episcopal Church and numerous ministry partners working towards General Convention resolution C019 (Establish Response to Systemic Injustice.) After a year of listening, learning and discerning, the Church’s Officers approved a comprehensive strategic vision for this work titled “Becoming Beloved Community: The Episcopal Church’s Long-term Commitment to Racial Healing, Reconciliation and Justice.”

Last fall, the Diocese of Oregon also approved a resolution committing to “Confronting Hate, Racism and Poverty in the Diocese of Oregon.”  This resolution states that we “stand firmly against the evil of racism,” and, along with other justice-centered initiatives, commits all parishes to ensuring “all leaders complete Diocesan anti-racism workshops.”

In the spirit of continuing and supporting this work, the Commission to End Racism of the Diocese of Oregon invites our diocese to participate in a Lenten program that will:

  • Introduce individuals and groups to the theology and practice of Becoming Beloved Community
  • Encourage participation in our diocesan Diverse Church workshops, and
  • Invite individuals and congregations to organize and participate in events centered around each of the four themes developed in Becoming Beloved Community :
      • Telling the truth
      • Proclaiming the Dream
      • Practicing the Way of Love
      • Repairing the Breach

The program itself is intended to be simple and do-able. What will draw us together each week is a common focus, but each person or congregation is encouraged to identify the practices or activities that will serve them best. Please join in this opportunity for faithful engagement as we take specific steps in living our Baptismal Covenant and “practicing the way of love.”

In Christ,
The Rev. Patricia Steagall, Diocesan Coordinator for Diverse Church Training
