Cathedral Choir of Girls and Adults Tour France and England

Cathedral Choir of Girls and Adults Tour France and England

Between July 27 and August 7, the Trinity Cathedral Choir will sing in two of the monuments of Western Christianity and civilization – Notre-Dame de Paris and St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. Sandwiched in between those two visits will be a sung Eucharist at the American Cathedral (Episcopal) in Paris, the seat of the American Episcopal Church’s Diocese of Europe.

At Notre-Dame, the choir will sing at a Saturday evening Vigil Mass. The following week, at St. Paul’s, the choir will sing no fewer than seven services of Evensongs, in addition to the Cathedral’s Sunday morning Eucharist. St. Paul’s, like all of its English Cathedral counterparts, relies on visiting choirs to sing the daily services in the absence of its resident choir on summer holiday.

The musical, social and pedagogical benefits of such a trip are beyond compare, and the choir is grateful for the support of its clergy and people, including the 40 or so parishioners and friends who will travel alongside the choir on a Companion Tour.

The Cathedral choristers are essential components of this trip and of the musical life of Trinity Cathedral, in general. Operating under the principles of the Royal School of Music, these trebles engage in a full range of activities – rehearsals, services, concerts with some of Portland’s leading musicians, tours and free instruction in piano, voice and music theory – which together is called the Trinity Choir School. Trinity’s approach to training these choristers places equal emphasis on musical development, religious education, leadership training and social activities. The Choir  School is always looking for new members, and previous musical training or religious affiliation is not a factor in consideration for membership. Please call music director Bruce Neswick at 503-478-1216 (Trinity Cathedral Music Office), if you know of someone (girls from 4th through 12th grade, and boys from 4th grade through changed voice) who might be interested in auditioning for the Choir School.
