A Holiday “Promise” at the Yaquina River Museum of Art

December 9, 2018 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Every year the Yaquina River Museum of Art, Toledo, celebrates the holidays with their annual Christmas show, “Promise.” The changing festive exhibition features an array of handcrafted items from Latin America, including original wood carvings, wool embroidery, dolls and painted art items.

The show features items from Guatemala, Peru, Colombia, and Ecuador. Also featured in the exhibition are Eastern and Western European Ikons. Two contemporary bronze sculptures by Michael Magrath, sculpture artist from Vashon Island, Washington, are new to the exhibit this year: “Our Lady of Life” or the “Annunciation”; and “Assumption” show the artist’s exploratory vision in depicting the youthful Virgin Mary at the time of conception of the savior and later as she prepares to leave this world as a wise and mature woman who has embraced a hard life.

All works of art featured in “Promise” are generously loaned to the Museum by Judy Gibbons, Pauline Morrison, and David Robinson. Gibbons lived in 5 countries in Latin America and collected the art over an 18 year period of time. She will  give a tour of the exhibit and informal talk about selected art pieces. The public is invited to view this unique collection of artesania on December 9th at 2:00PM at the 1887 School House, (now designated an exhibit and office for the museum) at 151 NE Alder St., Toledo.

The holiday fun will continue with a Christmas music Sing-A-Long across the street at St. John’s Episcopal Church in the Parish Hall. Refreshments of hot & cold cider, cookies and popcorn will be served. St. John’s Church dates from formation in 1886 and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. The present building was designed in 1937 by Ellis Lawrence (founder of School of Architecture U of O, Eugene) and is ranked in the ”Ellis Lawrence Building Survey” as a Primary Resource. The Gothic style church is a notable landmark in the city, two stories high with a bell tower. The chapel will be open for touring under guidance of Deacon Pauline Morrison.

Celebrate the season with the Yaquina River Museum of Art with the whole family and enjoy an afternoon of Christmas art and caroling on December 9th, beginning at 2:00 PM at the Museum’s Schoolhouse Exhibit located at 151 NE Alder Street in Toledo.
