Trinity Cathedral Wednesday Zoom Classes
October 7 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
An event every week that begins at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, repeating until October 14, 2020
Wednesday evenings, September 16-October 14, 7:00-8:30 pm.
1) Gospel of Musical Theatre: Race and Redemption — Following up on last fall’s introduction to musical theatre from a theological perspective, we’ll examine how musicals on the “Great White Way” have dealt with issues of race, prejudice, and sexuality in American life.
Taught by the Very Rev’d Nathan LeRud, Dean of Trinity Cathedral and a former musical theater performer.
2) The Kingdom of God vs. the Empires of the World — This class will consider how God’s call to the “Beloved Community” challenges the ways Church and Society operate in the world today. In dialogue with Derrick Jensen’s book The Culture of Make-Believe (pdf selections provided each week in advance), we’ll pay special attention to the intersections of environmental justice, capitalism, systemic violence and race.
Through contemplative practice, scriptural study, and critical reflection, this series will provide a nuanced look at the Empires we are called out of, but also a deeper appreciation of the Kingdom of Heaven we are called into.
Led by the Rev. Michael Ellick and Fumi Tosu. Fumi Tosu is a story-teller, peace-maker, and spiritual director with roots in the Catholic Worker movement. The Rev. Michael Ellick is a minister, a meditator, and a community organizer who currently works as Director of Public Engagement for Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon.
