The Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe
December 11 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
These services recall the multiple appearances of the Virgin Mary to Juan Diego, a native Mexican peasant, in 1531. Several miraculous events are associated with these apparitions, including healings, roses growing in winter, and an image of the Virgin Mary being imprinted on Juan Diego’s cloak.
This is one of the feasts of cultural pride for different ethnic and Native Nations within México. Many people may not understand what it is like to grow up in the Colonial Church. For Mexicans with Native background this story represents the idea that God accepts them and sides with their struggles. It also celebrates the acceptance of their own spirituality, among the Eurocentric views bred in the institutional church. Our Lady of Guadalupe is all about flowers in the middle of a winter world, what a sign of hope!
