Lenten Message from Bishop Michael

Lenten Message from Bishop Michael

Dear Friends in Christ:

“Simply obey. God does not ask anything else of you.”  Francis de Sales, Oeuvres

I write on the eve of the Lenten season. There is much that can and must be said of Lent and I will leave most of it to others. I commend to you the Lenten message of our Presiding Bishop; she is wise and has words that are helpful in preparation.  I also commend to you the Lenten message of your own parish clergy; they are wise and have good words as well.

I would simply add the words of Francis de Sales above. “Simply obey.” There is a standard of life, a rule of life – if you will – to which we are called by God in Christ. We are called to love, to fellowship, to prayer, to fasting, to acts of self-giving, to almsgiving. Simply obey and follow the Christ in all that you do and in all that you say. And, when you occasionally fail, repent and return to the Lord. For the Lord is good and loving and kind and the Lord desires your active participation in the renewal of the world.

As the days grow longer, as the light increases and the rain fades, let us with hope and love engage the world. Let us cry love at the heart of the world and make ourselves fit for living in the Kingdom of God. The Lord is good, with mercy everlasting and all we need to do to be a part of God is to simply obey.

Blessings,

+Michael Hanley
Bishop of Oregon
