Presiding Bishop-elect Michael Curry to lead revival in Eastern Oregon

How far would you drive to hear Presiding Bishop-elect Michael Curry, probably the most electrifying preacher in the Episcopal Church today?   The Diocese of Eastern Oregon is pleased to announce that Bishop Curry will lead their annual Adult Education weekend, July 30-August 2 and we are cordially invited to join them. If you can’t come for the whole weekend, plan to come on Sunday for what they are describing as the Great Camp Meeting. It will be an old-fashioned tent revival featuring fabulous preaching, amazing music, an altar call, the opportunity to renew our Baptismal vows, healing prayers and lunch.

All of this will be happening at Ascension School, the Diocese of Eastern Oregon’s camp and conference center in the little town of Cove. Cove is located a few miles east of LaGrande about a four-hour drive from Portland.

If you are coming just for the revival on Sunday, the cost will be $3 per person if you register in advance or $10 at the door. It you are able to come for the entire weekend, registration information is available at Register here.

P.S. The Diocese of Eastern Oregon would like to borrow as many Lift Every Voice & Sing 2 songbooks as possible. If your congregation has some to loan, please contact to let them know how many you will be bringing.

curry_preaching“We need some Christians who are as crazy as the Lord. Crazy enough to love like Jesus, to give like Jesus, to forgive like Jesus, to do justice, love mercy, walk humbly with God— like Jesus. Crazy enough to dare to change the world from the nightmare it often is into something close to the dream that God dreams for it. And for those who would follow him, those who would be his disciples, those who would live as and be the people of the Way? It might come as a shock, but they are called to craziness.”

  1. It would have been very nice if Bishop Curry was holding service’s in a larger venue with more hotel rooms available for those with limited travel, due to Medical Reasons. From Portland is a 4 hour drive to the LaGrande. That makes for an exceptionally long day.

    1. Hi Gerald! I’m happy to hear of your interest in Bishop Curry. Having grown up in the Diocese of Eastern Oregon, I know that Ascension School has a tradition of inviting exceptional people to lead their annual Adult Education weekend. Thirty years ago I was honored to meet Bishop Tutu there. I’m sure the arrangements with Bishop Curry were made long before he was even a candidate for Presiding Bishop. I’m just thankful that with all he has going on in his life right now, he is still able to come. I understand that housing is limited at the camp itself, but there are motels available in LaGrande and some of the other little towns nearby. It is a four-hour drive, but it is a beautiful trip through the Gorge. I hope it works out that you can go and take some time to enjoy the area. The Grande Ronde valley is one of my favorite places in the whole state.
