Resources for Adult Formation

Resources for Adult Formation

Happy New Year!  Although the church calendar begins in Advent and the secular calendar begins in January, those of us who are involved with the church know the new year really begins in September.  This is the time when we are finalizing and implementing our hopes and dreams for the coming months.  It is also the time when our mailboxes are full of suggestions for programs we can use throughout the year.

Like many of you, I just received a glossy folder from Church Publishing Incorporated (CPI) titled DVD Studies for Small Groups.  I am happy to report that our diocesan Resource Room has all of the featured adult formation resources and they are available for you to check out at no cost.  These include the entire Embracing Series featuring such well-known presenters as Marcus Borg, Walter Brueggemann, Richard Rohr, Diana Butler Bass, Phyllis Tickle, Kathleen Norris, Barbara Crafton and Eboo Patel.  Each includes a 5-6 session DVD and a Participant’s Workbook.  Additional information is available at www.ChurchPublishing.org/embracing.   We also have Hazardous Saints which is Church Publishing’s newest DVD series as well as their seasonal offerings A Thrill of Hope: The Christmas Story in Word and Art and What Wondrous Love: Holy Week in Word and Art.

In addition to the resources from Church Publishing, we have most of the offerings from Living the Questions including Living the Questions 2.0, Saving Jesus Redux, First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom of God, Eclipsing Empire: Paul’s message of the Kingdom of God, Uppity Women of the Bible, and Painting the Stars: Science, Religion and an Evolving Faith. Sessions vary from 7-25 depending on the series.  Additional Information is available at www.livingthequestions.com.

If you are looking for something new and different, I recommend  Animate: Faith, an imaginative exploration of Christianity’s big questions published by SparkHouse which is a division of Augsburg Press, the Lutheran publishing house. For details, see www.wearesparkhouse.org/adults .  And if you are looking for a classic, you might consider Genesis: A Living Conversation based on the Bill Moyer’s special of the same name www.billmoyers.com/series/genesis or the Great Religions of the World series published by The Great Courses.

If you would like to check out any of the above-mentioned DVD series, please contact me and we will get them to you as soon as possible.  We also will have a table at convention where you will be able to view and check-out these as well as many other resources.  And, if there is something you would like to use that we don’t yet have, please let me know and we will be happy to add it to our collection.  Our goal is to support your ministry by making the resources you need available to you.

Blessings to you all,
