St. Barnabas, Portland Seeks Part-time Organist (Updated Salary)

St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Portland, Oregon, is seeking an Organist.  Our Sunday worship is in a traditional style based on the Book of Common Prayer.  There is currently regularly only one service with music, our 10:00 a.m service which is Rite II with a choir.  Music is a vital part of St. Barnabas and is integral to our Sunday services. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Should have experience in liturgical worship and comfortable in the Anglican tradition.  Skilled in organ technique as well as piano/keyboard.
  • Must be able to read music as written and prepare sufficiently and can sight read at an intermediate level or higher.
  • Must have prior accompaniment experience for cantor and choir.
  • Ability to lead sectionals and occasionally lead rehearsals in the absence of the Director.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform a wide range of musical styles.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Consistently exhibit effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Present a professional appearance and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Maintain excellence in one’s own musical skills through regular practices, study and continuing education.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Report to the Music Director and Rector and be a supportive and positive team member. Note that in our tradition, our canons specify that the rector is ultimately responsible for music.  At St. Barnabas we work together in a spirit of collegiality and respect.
  2. Provide accompaniment for all regular 10:00 a.m. services in collaboration with the Music Director; and, special services or events such as the parish’s Oktoberfest celebration, and seasonal celebrations such as Advent, Christmas, Lent, Holy Week, etc.
  3. Accompany choir for their weekly rehearsals. Rehearsals are currently on Tuesday evenings, but are subject to change.
  4. Prepare organ preludes and postludes for all services.
  5. Work with the choir librarian to maintain the organ music in the choir library.
  6. Be involved in the maintenance of the organ and pianos.
  7. Communicate with Music Director regularly via email, telephone, and occasional meetings.
  8. Provide hymn accompaniments for the parish’s Oktoberfest celebration.
  9. Perform other duties related to the ministry of music that may be assigned by the Music Director and Rector.

Compensation:

Weekly: $200 – 1 rehearsal and 1 service. Additional rehearsals: $75, additional services: $125
