Last Sunday, Bishop Michael blessed icons completed by students of Trinity Iconography Institute, a ministry of Trinity Cathedral, Portland. The annual ceremony of Blessing the Icons occurs every Trinity Sunday.
Trinity Iconography Institute started in 1995, in response to the desire by several members of Trinity to learn the craft of painting icons. While they do actually use paint and paint-brushes in the creation of icons, the craft is traditionally referred to as “writing” an icon, since the word iconography, from the Greek, actually means to write.
The 36 – hour classes in iconography are always geared to the beginner student and are offered four times each year. The classes are held on Trinity’s campus in Portland, Oregon.
No prior artistic skills are necessary; the instructions are geared towards this being a unique experience that includes instruction in the technical skills of working with the egg-tempera medium as well as aspects of Church history and basic theology.
